Job Title: Sewer Crew 1-4
Department: Water Reclamation (Sewer)
Reports To: Sewer Crew 5 Foreman ROINC
Employment Status: Bargaining Unit – AFSCME General Unit
Pay Rate per Hour: Sewer Crew 1-4($30.13-$42.83/hr.) Depending Qualifications
This position does qualify for overtime pay.
Hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may change to meet operational needs, including call-backs and shift changes, as outlined in the AFSCME Bargaining Agreement.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned
All aspects of Operation of the Water Reclamation Treatment Plant / Collection System
All aspects of maintaining waste water quality to meet IEPA / EPA NPDES governed limits
All aspects of Public waste water safety
Waste water reporting
Activated Sludge Operations
Adjust Chemicals to maintain waste water discharge limits
Maintenance of Waste Water Plant / Collection Equipment
Cleaning of Waste Water Plant / Collection Equipment
Operation of Pumping Stations
Operation of Water Reclamation Equipment
Conduct Required Testing, record keeping
Handling and Utilization of Chemicals
Assisting with Installation / Repairs of Mains, Pipes, Valves, Meters and Other Equipment
Inspection of New or Repaired Facilities
Perform locates to ensure water, sewer integrity
Perform locates to assist with excavation
Cleaning and Maintenance of Department Equipment
Lift 50 lbs. and Climb Stairways
Operate a Computer / Input Data to Spreadsheet and Other Various Programs
Assist with land use plan reviews
Assist with new construction, plant/collection/system modifications and/or plant/collection/system repair plan reviews
Participate and/or Coordinate in Public education/awareness programs
Other Duties as Assigned to maintain Water Reclamation Plant / Collection self sufficiency
Cross functional training and/or duties may be assigned
Other Duties as Assigned
Requirements
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have successfully passed and is in possession of a valid IEPA Class 1-4 Waste Water Treatment Operator Certificate / License. If the selected candidate does not already possess a Class 1-4 certification, they must obtain at minimum a Class 4 (In-training) within eleven (11) months of hire. Also, individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one year of responsible experience in building and mechanical equipment maintenance and repair; or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
Maintain Valid Driver’s License
Good skill in the use of hand and power tools
Must be familiar with the sampling, reporting and operational regulations set forth by the IEPA pertaining to waste water plant operations.
Must be familiar with SCADA systems, PLC’s, VFD’s and lift station operations.
Must be able to trouble shoot plant / collection system / Activated Sludge shortfalls and be able to adjust plant chemistry based on inflows, toxicity and weather conditions.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret miscellaneous drawings and schematics.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid Illinois Driver’s License (minimum, CDL “B” required) If the selected candidate does not already possess a Class B CDL endorsement they must obtain it within two (2) years of hire. The employer will assist with training once a reimbursement agreement has been agreed to.

Physical Demands

The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift 50 lbs and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception.
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; confined spaces; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals (which may require the use of a breathing apparatus, i.e. respirator); outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud. All employees are required to adhere to all safety rules and regulations at all times, while working, on city property, on or in residential private property, or operating city vehicles or equipment. This includes all OSHA safety standards, Department of Labor guidelines and those set forth by the City of Wilmington.
