OverviewNow Hiring: Full-time or Part-time Urgent Care Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Location: Hurley Veterinary Hospital
509 Hurley Ave, Hurley, NY 12443
Compensation
- Base Pay: $28-$30/hour (based on experience)
- Urgent Care Differential: Additional $4.00/hour
Hurley Veterinary Hospital is a progressive, AAHA-accredited, multi-doctor practice offering advanced care with a commitment to low-stress handling techniques. Our hospital features soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, an in-house Zoetis lab, and Pulse Veterinary Software.
We're growing! We currently have 5 veterinarians on staff and will be welcoming our 6th doctor at the end of July.
Position Overview
We are seeking a full-time Licensed Veterinary Technician to join our dedicated and compassionate team. This position includes both surgical responsibilities during the week and urgent care shifts on weekends.
Schedule
- Urgent Care:
- Saturdays & Sundays (8 AM - 8 PM)
- Required: 3 weekends per month
- Surgical Shifts (Weekdays):
- 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM or 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
- Must have strong surgical experience
We can accommodate weekend-only shifts or Urgent Care only.
- IV catheter placement
- Venipuncture
- Patient triage and prioritization
- Surgical prep and monitoring
- Supporting the medical team with high-quality, compassionate care
- Training and mentoring support staff
- Maintaining workflow efficiency and patient safety
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in the state of New York
- Minimum 3 years of hospital experience, preferably in a fast-paced or urgent care setting
- Surgical experience required
- Strong communication and multitasking skills
- Passion for patient care and teamwork
- AAHA Accredited
- Low-stress handling certified staff
- Soft tissue and orthopedic surgery
- In-house diagnostics with Zoetis lab equipment
- Digital records with Pulse Veterinary Software
- Monday - Friday: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM (Wednesday until 7 PM)
- Saturday: 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM
- Sunday: Closed

Responsibilities
- Deliver patient care under the supervision of a veterinarian (DVM).
- Maintain clear and accurate medical, client, and case records using appropriate terminology and grammar.
- Review medical records, treatment estimates, and discharge instructions with clients, and respond to basic animal care inquiries, escalating medical questions to veterinarians as needed.
- Guide and support medical support staff to ensure efficient shift operations and workflow.
- Mentor team members to encourage career growth and personal development.
- Provide input for 360-degree performance evaluations of employees.
- Assist with client services including appointment scheduling, payments, check-in, and courteous phone communication.
- Provide feedback and suggest improvements to training programs; participate in training sessions, job shadows, and working interviews.
- Perform assigned cleaning, clinic upkeep, and equipment maintenance tasks.
- Delegate cleaning or other duties during slow periods when a supervisor is unavailable.
- Identify and address areas needing additional attention within the clinic environment.
- Answer client inquiries confidently about routine procedures and animal care.
- Communicate effectively with team members and clients to support patient care and hospital operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned within the nature and level of work.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technician program.
- Current state veterinary technician license in good standing.
- One year of experience in the veterinary industry is preferred.
- Proficiency in a range of technical skills including laboratory procedures, pharmacy, radiology, surgery, dental care, and nursing.
- Ability to administer subcutaneous (SQ), intramuscular (IM), and intravenous (IV) injections.
- Knowledge of commonly used veterinary medications including dosage, side effects, and client communication.
- Understanding of anesthesia and patient recovery monitoring, with the ability to recognize and report changes in patient status.
- Ability to remain calm and efficient in stressful or fast-paced environments, including medical emergencies.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfort and confidence in handling animals of all sizes and temperaments.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds independently, and over 50 pounds with assistance.
- Capacity to sit, stand, and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods.
- Ability to work in noisy environments with sounds from animals and medical equipment.
- Routine exposure to animals that may bite or scratch.
- Occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medications/controlled substances.
- Adequate hearing to understand verbal instructions and client communication.
- Vision capabilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate medical equipment and computer systems
