Position: Building Inspector

Salary: $20.59 - 25.23/hr BOQ
Under administrative direction of the Code Administrator, the purpose of the position is to perform responsible professional, technical, and administrative work in relation to inspection activities and regulatory standards for permitting and licensing approval of residential and commercial building construction throughout the City. Employees in this classification perform at entry professional level, and are responsible for the inspection process, assessing, evaluating and enforcing adherence to and compliance with all applicable city, state and federal code and regulatory requirements regarding new and existing construction. Objective is to ensure the safety, health and general welfare of the general public and business community.

Performs systematic site inspections of skilled trades work for new and existing construction within the city, to ensure compliance with all applicable city, state and federal code and regulatory requirements
- Identifies compliance problems and issues deficiency write-ups; meets with violators and general public to explain and interpret city codes and advises violator of expected time frame to correct the infraction
- Collaborates with independent contractors and subcontractors, homeowners, and internal administrative support to ensure all required documentation is completed and submitted for approval of requested permits and licenses
- Enforces all applicable city, state and federal code and regulatory requirements regarding new and existing construction throughout the City, e.g., application review, inspection procedures and plans examination
- Organizes and maintains inspection requests and routes to ensure inspection process is performed accurately and efficiently; may be required to assist with fire inspections and investigations
- Communicates with Code Administrator on any structural problems, code issues or regulatory requirements that have not been resolved
- Provides technical plans review and interpretation of the various codes for which the division is responsible for enforcing
- Maintains current knowledge of trends and regulatory developments for application to functional areas under charge
- Communicates with other departments, public agencies and the general public for the dissemination of information
- Performs related duties as directed
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years of related construction or inspection experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Knowledge of building codes, the International Building Code and standard construction practices preferred
- Must have excellent computer skills and ability to communicate effectively including making presentations; must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City and State officials, private sector executives, business representatives, and the public
- Must obtain State of Tennessee and ICC Certifications (Residential & Commercial Building Inspector, Residential & Commercial Mechanical Inspector, and Residential & Commercial Plumbing Inspector) within twelve (12) months from the date of hire; and, obtain Combination Inspector II job classification within three (3) years of the date of hire
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

- General office conditions; exposed to moderate noise levels
- Sit at a desk and use hand, wrist, and finger movements to operate a computer regularly
- Talk and listen to other individuals in meetings and over the phone
- Stand and walk around the office and to other City facilities in order to perform day-to-day duties
- Lift and carry general office supplies and equipment
